Mixing Audio Sources

Source Channel Remapping

Audio layers have a parameter called Source Channel Remapping. This parameter lets you assign different file channels to the layer channels. In most cases, a WAV file is a stereo file with left and right channels. You can adjust remapping to control how much of each channel is sent to the left and right speakers. To do this, select your audio layer, go to the Inspector in the Properties section, and access the Source Channel Remapping group.

The setting indicates that 100% of the left channel is sent to the left and 100% of the right channel is sent to the right. You can reduce the volume of the right channel to just hear the left channel or vice versa and just keep the right channel.

You can also add both channels together and send them exclusively to the right channel, which you could see with the increased amplitude on the waveform for this channel.

Not Just for Stereo Files

Autograph isn't limited to just using audio elements in stereo mode. You can see this by importing the AC3 sample file from the movie Tears of Steel, bundled in the ZIP file.

After adding this source to a new layer, unfold the Source Channel Remapping group. Here there is a 5.1 surround sound file and many more channels. Unfolding this layer in the Timeline and giving more space to this panel will show all parameters and the waveform section. Since the volume of this premix is really low, you need to increase the file volume gain and listen to the output of all of these channels. These different tracks contain dialogues, music, and sound effects.

Select all of these channels and set their inputs to 0.0, then set the input side right and left parameters to 1.0 and listen to the result. Now only the music is audible. Do the same thing for every channel by setting the inputs back to 0.0, then a specific track to 1.0. Remember that you can also boost the Volume Gain of the whole layer to make this layer more audible.

Notes

Autograph isn't intended to be a dedicated audio software, but it allows you to extract sound information from multiple tracks to control graphic parameters based on this Audio Mix.
